Signs and Symptoms of Hormonal Imbalance
Perimenopause
Our hormone production fluctuates wildly as we approach menopause. This period of time is called Perimenopause and can start as early as our 30s. This hormonal imbalance can sometimes be hard to recognize as the process is gradual and can start 10 years before menopause occurs. As time goes on and our hormones become more out of balance, we start to experience the common symptoms of perimenopause:
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Worse PMS (breast tenderness, fluid retention and bloating)
- Longer PMS (lasting 1-2 weeks instead of 1-2 days)
- Heavier or lighter periods
- Irregular or more frequent periods
- Anxiety, irritability, mood swings
- Insomnia and waking up in the night
- Hot flashes
- Adult acne
Menopause
Menopause is defined as twelve consecutive months without a period. Your ovaries stop producing Estrogen and Progesterone. On average, this occurs at age 52 but can occur much earlier or later. Common symptoms of menopause include:
- Weight gain
- Fatigue
- Dry, thin, aging skin and wrinkles
- Depression
- Hot flashes
- Insomnia
- Vaginal dryness
- Painful intercourse
- Low libido
- Brain fog and poor memory
- Dry eyes
Other health conditions commonly associated with hormonal imbalances include:
- Low Estrogen: loss of menstrual regularity, vaginal dryness, mood changes, brain fog, fatigue, and low libido .
- Estrogen Dominance (High) or Low Progesterone: weight gain, increased stress and anxiety, disrupted sleep, increased PMS, heavier periods and shorter menstrual cycles.
- Low Testosterone: loss of muscle tone, vaginal dryness, lack of interest in sex, feeling unmotivated or “flat.”
- Low Thyroid or Hypothyroidism: fatigue, weight gain, slowed metabolism, mood changes, irregular menstrual cycles, constipation, feeling cold all the time.
- Adrenal Issues (Low or High Cortisol): weight gain, sleep troubles, waking up in the middle of the night or inability to fall asleep and stay asleep, fatigue, anxiety/depression, inability to handle stress like you used to, brain fog.
- Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): excess and unwanted hair growth on body despite loss of hair on scalp, acne, irregular periods, infertility, weight gain, insulin resistance.
Other Potential Causes of Hormone Imbalances
Your hormonal imbalance may be caused by a combination of factors. The major causes of hormonal imbalance are:
-
Gut Dysbiosis
also known as an imbalance of your microorganisms: As Americans who eat a Standard American Diet, we don’t always eat the healthiest, get enough fiber, or drink enough water. It is very common to have an imbalance of “good” to “bad” microorganisms in your Gut. This directly affects your ability to metabolize Estrogen and balance all of your hormones. -
Stress:
This has a major effect on your hormone Cortisol which directly affects all of your other hormones, Gut dysbiosis, and fat storage. -
Weight Gain:
Your fat cells produce estrogen, create inflammation, and interfere with how Insulin functions, all factors that contribute to hormonal imbalance. -
Inflammation:
Your hormones Cortisol and Insulin are directly affected by inflammation which creates a negative cascade of changes for all of your other hormones. -
Food Allergies:
Approximately 1 in 3 women have some type of Immune reaction to common foods they eat regularly and may have no idea. This chronic inflammation causes Gut Dysbiosis and hormonal imbalance.
-
Lifestyle Factors:
Lack of exercise, consistent alcohol intake, poor sleep, poor nutrition with excessive sugar intake can seriously disrupt your hormones. -
Exposure to Toxins:
Whether we realize it or not, we are exposed to thousands of synthetic chemicals every day. These frequently interfere with how your hormones work in your body. -
Genetic Predisposition:
Do “hormone problems” run in your family? Certain genes affect how you metabolize toxins and Estrogens. -
